I have Bunions! What should I do?

I have Bunions! What should I do?

Firstly, what is a bunion?

A bunion is a deformity of your big toe joint. The fancy term for this is ‘hallux abducto valgus’.

But don’t panic, bunions are very common! Women are 3 times more likely to develop a bunion than men. The incidence among women is estimated to be as high as 50%!

How did I get a bunion?

The jury is out on this one… There is no definite cause for bunions.

However, here is a list of risk factors associated with bunions.

  • Poor fitting footwear
  • Joint laxity (loose joints)
  • Biomechanical abnormality (forces in the wrong places when you walk)
  • Genetic predisposition (did your mother/father have them?)

Ok, so what should I do about my bunion?

Bunions do not cause pain for many people. As a general rule, don’t fix problems that are not there.

However, if you are experiencing pain you should book an appointment here at the Merrion Foot Clinic. We can relieve pain through chiropody care, exercises and orthotic interventions. Our aim is to keep you moving pain free.
