Plantar Fasciitis Treatments.

What is Plantar Fasciitis?

Plantar Fasciitis is the inflammation of the plantar fascia, which is a band of tendinous tissue that begins at the base of the heel and extends out to the toes. The plantar fascia works to support the arch of the foot as it moves through the various stages of gait and to provide shock absorption as we walk.

Symptoms of Plantar Fasciitis:

  • Pain or tenderness in the bottom of the heel.
  • May be accompanied by pain in the arch.
  • The pain is worse in the morning or after long periods of rest, and eases with light activity.

Causes of Plantar Fasciitis:

  • Sudden increase in activity
  • Flat, unsupportive footwear
  • Incorrect foot posture resulting in strain of the muscles within the foot
  • Tight calf muscles

Treatment:

  • Rest & ice to settle inflammation
  • Prescription of a tailored stretching and strengthening regime to heal the plantar fascia
  • Orthotics to correct foot posture and reduce strain on plantar fascia
  • Footwear advice - footwear should have a rigid heel counter and midsole, and flexibility at the toes.
